We endeavour to keep the use of commenting and debate on The Independent as fair and balanced as possible.
Comments are managed by a 24-hour moderation team, the reporting of inappropriate posts by our commenting community, and our users abiding by community rules.
We do not assume that you support all the views expressed by our writers and contributors. Not making assumptions about you is, we hope, a sign of our respect for your opinions – and we hope you will extend the same courtesy to other users of our site. This principle also guides our approach to moderation.
Our moderation programme operates on two layers simultaneously:
-
Automated moderation – our software runs around the clock to identify potentially problematic words. Once flagged by the system, a comment is suspended and referred to our human moderators for review.
-
Human moderation – a dedicated team of moderators decides whether to approve comments or remove them if they breach our community guidelines.
- Please consider our community guidelines when participating in our comment sections.
Please note that comments are not moderated by the customer service team.
When a comment is referred for moderation, it is temporarily suspended from the site until a moderator approves it for publication. Comments containing certain flagged words are automatically held for review. This process usually takes less than 24 hours.
If a comment you have submitted does not appear on the site immediately, this is likely the reason. Unless it contains abusive language or otherwise violates our community guidelines, it should be published within 24 hours.
